The GOAT herself joined our listeners in person this week for a run in Phoenix Park. I captured some sounds and asked Sonia why the "run slow to run fast" mantra might not apply to her. We look forward to the World Championships in Budapest and back at an incredible summer of running for Irish athletes including Sophie O'Sullivan. With the Dublin marathon less than 90 days away I ask Sonia about the most challenging hill on the course. Is it possible to prepare for a "heartbreak hill" or is giving it a name a step in the wrong direction? I take a spin into Vinny Mulvey (Patreon exclusive content visit www.patreon.com/irishmababroad to sign up today) for a chat about marathon training with less than 3 months to go. Is the 10% mileage increase a hard and fast rule or can we jump it a little faster a little sooner. There's also a trip around the Strava parishes and Sonia's tip of the week to enjoy.Come and see me on tour this autumn. Visit www.jigser.com for all my tour dates.Or why not come to our next week up run. Find the club on Strava today. If you’d like to contact me directly, that is easy too. You know what to do!1. The spirit of Parkrun is not centred around beating your fastest time but if there’s a wall there, you may as well try and jump over it some time. You can sit on it, arrange to meet friends at the wall, chew the fat and have fun but occasionally it’s ok to jump it. With the help of the Queen of Irish athletics you can instantly take minutes off your time. You’re not going to believe how glaringly obvious and ingenious her tips are. Profound wisdom that is hard won from her years training and winning all around the world. Later in the show elite physical therapist and coach Vinny Mulvey joins me to discuss the best way to prepare your week to run fast on a Saturday morning and how to make a Rocky trilogy in a month of Parkruns. You’ll be standing with both fists in the air at the end of this episode.

Jarlath is also on tour right now. He will be doing his latest standup show in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Armagh, Galway, Cork, Birmingham, London and Tralee to why not grab a ticket while you can. All the other dates have fully sold out! https://linktr.ee/IrishmanAbroad

Sonia O'Sullivan chats to comedian Jarlath Regan about the latest news in world athletics and how to adjust your running training when things are no longer going to plan. The ability to change is what separates the good from the great. Sonia is Ireland's greatest track athlete ever so she knows a thing or two about adjust. As a coach at Union Athletic Club in Nike's Portland HQ, her job is to spot the changes other athletes need to make. She identifies the best way to get your self out of a training funk through self assessment and honest feedback from people you trust. Later in the show she takes questions from the listeners on "over training", returning from injury and how to adjust your training as you get older. It's a jam packed episode with Jarlath taking on a gym session with elite Irish coach Vinny Mulvey for the very first time. Can adjusting your attitude to strength training really fend off injury and reduce your times dramatically? Sonia and Vinny are in total agreement on this one. Why not hear the whole episode by signing up to the Irishman Running Abroad Patreon page on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad - you'll get hundreds of hours of exclusive content and interviews and much much more. In 1987 at the Cork City Sports meet, a seventeen year old Sonia O’Sullivan ran a time for 3000 metres that would have qualified her for the 1988 Olympics. It was the race that put her on the map. We go back to that summer’s evening when the legend in the making took a bus from Cobh to Cork to stomp her opposition into the ground. Injury adversity would strike soon after but it was this taste of success that drove her through the long weeks of rehab that would follow. How exaclty was the mindset of athletes in 1987 different today? What can it teach us about resilience and toughness? Is talking about problems the right answer to all problems or can we make them bigger by expanding the headspace they occupy?

The Irishman Running Abroad Podcast is Ireland’s number 1 running podcast  and each week examines a different aspect of training. This week we catch up with the GOAT as she travels to Washington to visit her daughter Sophie - an NCAA athlete on the rise herself. The “grand” forests and hills, the lunch box of champions and a trip around the Strava parishes for Sonia’s runners of the week make up the rest of this jam packed episode of Ireland’s favourite running podcast.

Catching the sight of yourself in a mirror is one thing, catching the sight of yourself running in a video is a whole other level? Even Sonia admits to having a different view of her running form to the reality that presents itself whenever someone hits record. Can we take steps to improve the way we run or is perfection an illusion when it comes to this very personal thing. Elite running coach and physical therapist Vinny Mulvey has seen it all. He joins the episode to reflect on how thinking can impact on form and why relaxation is the key to finding your personal best running economy. Jarlath is on tour and spinning multiple plates at the moment. He finds himself in Cork for the Ballincollig Parkrun and pays a visit to John Buckley Sports - Sonia's favourite running shop in the world. As mentioned, you can find double size episodes each week and gain access to hundreds of superb ad free episodes and training tips from Sonia over on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad - Patrons are the life blood of the show.

The legend Sonia O’Sullivan breaks down the most confusing items of running terminology as submitted by our listeners. From tempos to fartleks, floats to bandits, it’s all here in this jargon busting episode with the GOAT of Irish running. The extended episode (available on Patreon) also includes Sonia revealing her VO2 max, even more jargon busting and a visit to Poppintree Park in Dublin to take in the sights & sounds of one listener’s 250th Parkrun. Sonia even finds time to breakdown some Ozzie and Cork slang. You’ll be “away for slates” after this episode.

Sonia is back in Portland after a brief stop at a relay carnival like no other - The Penn Relays. We get some of the sights and sounds of the big event including Villanova's dramatic win in the men's mile relay and Marcus O'Sullivan's emotional post race interview. "The memories that are made last forever and they are magic" but at some point you have to come back to earth and get out to train again.

That's the position many people find themselves in after a marathon. What better time to look the most basic part of how you run? The petrol you put in your engine is a simple way of looking at it but when it comes to food the choice is not as simple as petrol or diesel. In a world of experts everyone is an idiot. Sonia has a way of peeling back the nonsense and stripping away the silly stuff that might get in the way of your ability to make good choices at the fridge.

Together we sift through some of the harder questions on this subject and some of the guiding principles she has espoused in her Irish Times articles over the years. Good fats, the traffic light system, the formula and the role of sugar in what a healthy life looks like, all come under Sonia's microscope in today's nutrition episode. We even have time to go around the Strava parishes to see which runners have stood out to Ireland's GOAT this week.

More than 40,000 runners took to the streets of London on Sunday April 23rd, 2023, to run 26.2 miles.
